Quick answer: Salesforce Certified Tableau Desktop Foundations and Microsoft PL-300 are both certification assessments, but they validate different BI ecosystems and different readiness profiles. Choose by the tool used in the target work, then by whether your current capability matches that issuer’s assessment scope. Neither is a universal winner.
Start with the target BI ecosystem
The first decision is not which certification has the stronger brand. It is which tool you actually need to use.
- If the target environment uses Tableau Desktop, Tableau Desktop Foundations is the relevant foundational assessment path.
- If the target environment uses Power BI, PL-300 is the relevant Microsoft role-based assessment path.
- If the target environment is unknown, do not book either exam yet. Confirm the stack through real job descriptions, team tooling, or client requirements.

Both are assessments, not beginner teaching programs
Salesforce Certified Tableau Desktop Foundations is a foundational Tableau Desktop certification assessment. Microsoft Certified: Power BI Data Analyst Associate is earned through the PL-300 assessment process and evaluates Power BI capability.
Neither exam should be used as a substitute for structured teaching. If a diagnostic task reveals several connected skill gaps, use the relevant learning path or broader practice first.
Tableau Desktop Foundations fits a foundational Tableau-readiness decision
Salesforce currently describes the target candidate as having foundational Tableau Desktop knowledge and skills and typically at least three months applying that understanding in the product.
The current exam guide lists 40 scored multiple-choice or multiple-select items, up to five additional unscored items, and a 70-minute time limit.
This makes the certification most coherent when the learner already works in Tableau Desktop at a foundational level and has a concrete reason to validate that capability.
PL-300 fits a Power BI role-based readiness decision
Microsoft currently frames the Power BI Data Analyst certification at Intermediate level. The current study guide measures four high-level domains: prepare the data, model the data, visualize and analyze the data, and manage and secure Power BI. Microsoft also expects candidates to be proficient with Power Query and DAX.
The current certification page lists 100 minutes to complete the proctored assessment. Preparation time is separate and depends on the learner’s starting capability.
Do not compare Foundational and Intermediate as a quality ranking
Salesforce’s foundational positioning and Microsoft’s intermediate positioning describe different assessment profiles. They do not establish that one certification is more valuable, prestigious, difficult in every context, or better for every learner.
The relevant question is whether your existing capability matches the assessment associated with the tool you need to use.
Use a real task before booking either exam
For Tableau, attempt a Tableau Desktop task that resembles the target work without step-by-step prompting. For Power BI, attempt the relevant workflow across data preparation, modeling, measures, reporting, analysis, and explanation.
If several capabilities fail, structured teaching is more defensible than immediate exam booking. If only a small number of objectives remain weak, focused preparation may be enough.
Current exam time is not preparation time
Tableau Desktop Foundations currently lists a 70-minute assessment. PL-300 currently lists 100 minutes to complete the exam.
Those figures are exam-session durations, not estimates of how long you need to become ready. A shorter exam is not evidence of an easier or better certification.
Current price structures are not directly comparable
Salesforce currently lists Foundations registration at USD 75 or JPY 10,000, plus applicable taxes, with a free retake.
Microsoft does not publish one universal PL-300 fee on the certification page; it states that exam pricing is based on the country or region where the exam is proctored.
Do not manufacture a global price winner from one Salesforce currency value and one Microsoft regional quote. Recheck both issuers immediately before registration.
Renewal and retake are different concepts
Salesforce’s current Foundations pricing includes a free retake context. That concerns another attempt after an unsuccessful exam result.
Microsoft currently lists a 12-month renewal frequency for the Power BI Data Analyst certification. Eligible holders can renew at no cost through an online Microsoft Learn renewal assessment during the renewal window.
A retake policy and a certification-renewal policy solve different problems and should not be collapsed into one cost comparison.
Neither certification creates an independent portfolio
Passing either exam can document that you met the issuer’s assessment requirements. It does not, by itself, establish independent project ownership, portfolio quality, employer preference, job readiness, salary impact, or workplace performance.
If your main weakness is evidence that you can solve an open-ended business problem independently, build a project in the target BI tool instead of assuming another certification closes that gap.
When should you choose neither?
Choosing neither is valid when:
- the target BI ecosystem is unknown;
- you still need broad teaching rather than assessment;
- your remaining gap is narrow and focused preparation is sufficient;
- your target role does not value either credential;
- independent project evidence is the more important next step.
